NewQuest Geotechnology Explores Ijen

Thursday, 25 Mey 2017

For 20 days (1 – 20 May 2017), PT NewQuest Getechnology participated in researcher team to Ijen Mountain, East Java. The 12-member team consists students from the Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS). This field research in order to acquire geothermal data using magnetic method, gravity method, and geological studies.

The research area is centered around the Ijen Caldera, which is an active volcano located on the border between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso Districts, East Java, Indonesia. This mountain has a height of 2,443 MDPL (meters above sea level) and is located adjacent to Mount Merapi. Mount Ijen last erupted in 1999. One of the most famous natural phenomena of Mount Ijen is the crater located at its peak and the blue fire.

The team conducted geophysical (gravity and magnetic) surveys at 72 points spread over Ijen Caldera. Geological surveys and structural identification were carried out from the northern and southern of Ijen Caldera to confirm the results of structural interpretation by remote sensing. Survey followed by lithology survey, which took samples of rock from various points in Ijen Caldera. The survey was conducted to confirm the type of rock on the lithology map.

Explore Ijen is very useful for students. There, students are guided directly in the survey process, from planning, data acquisition in the field, data processing, and routine habits during the field. In general, students feel very helpful and learned a lot from the survey activities. The data obtained will be used to support student research in UI.
